ArchivalResource

Barnsley family papers, 1825-1904.

Correspondence (1834-1898), accounts (1825-1894), and other papers, primarily of Godfrey Barnsley, but also including papers of his children. The letters contain much information on economic conditions in the South after the Civil War and on the fate of Barnsley's sons, George and Lucien, who joined an ex-Confederate group who emigrated to Brazil. Documents also relate to the family's plantation, "Woodlands," in Bartow County, Georgia, which was managed after the war by daughter Julia Barnsley Baltzelle von Schwartz. Letters of son Harold Barnsley relate to his travels in the northern United States, the Philippines, and China (1846-1858); there are also letters of Barnsley's two older daughters, Anna Barnsley Gilmour and Adelaide Barnsley Reid. Also included are account books (1825-1838) of William Scarborough, a Savannah merchant and father of Julia Scarborough Barnsley, wife of Godfrey Barnsley; Civil War documents and letters of Peter Baltzelle, provost marshal of the Confederate Army; letters and papers of Baron Charles Henry von Schwartz; and genealogical data for the Barnsley, Cotton, and Scarborough families.
